  ResearchNOTES

December 2007
I get by with a little help from my friends...

One of the biggest challenges about writing ResearchNOTES every month is coming up with fresh ideas. Thanks to the generosity of friends and colleagues who share their Internet tips, I always come across some great content for this e-mail bulletin. This month, I'd like to share three great sites I've learned about from fellow information professionals...

I always look forward to Mary Ellen Bates' newsletters, blog, and presentations for her search expertise and insights into the information industry (http://www.BatesInfo.com). She recently mentioned a new search tool that helps you separate commercial sites from more information-oriented sites. Go to Yahoo! Mindset at http://mindset.research.yahoo.com and enter your search terms. Then use the slider to change the results to meet your need - very neat!

Tara Calishain publishes ResearchBuzz (http://www.researchbuzz.org), and she always seems to be way ahead of the rest of us when it comes to finding the latest cool tool. She even creates some herself. GooFresh - at http://www.researchbuzz.org/wp/tools/goofresh - is an easy way for you to find sites that have been added to Google today, yesterday, within the last seven days, or last 30 days.

Finally, thanks to Kim Burkhardt (http://www.burkhardtresearch.com), I learned more about using PowerPoint from a comedy routine (found at http://tinyurl.com/2g75b9) than I have in any article I've read in a business publication. I also learned that - thanks to Web 2.0 and other changes on the Web - we are finding new places to get our information.

See you next year - Marcy
