"The information of the people at large can alone make them safe..." - Thomas Jefferson Now that the primaries are completed and we're gearing up for Democratic and Republican National Conventions this summer, the U.S. presidential campaign season is in full swing. But don't rely on sound bites, talking heads, and negative ads to stay informed. This month's issue of ResearchNOTES offers you a few good sites for keeping up with the candidates and the issues... As usual, one of the best lists of links around is from the University of Michigan Documents Center. Go to Elections 2008, at http://snipurl.com/2gczw, for details about the candidates, the issues, and the election system. Project Vote Smart, a political research organization found at http://www.vote-smart.org/, covers candidate voting records, issue positions, finances, and public statements. You'll even be able to see what other organizations are saying about the candidates. Google recently announced the release of their Elections '08 Map Gallery, a collection of maps that use Google Earth to display political data. Visit http://snipurl.com/2ob0b to view information about the primaries, fundraising, campaign stops, and more. You can read more about this new project at Google LatLong, the Google Maps blog, at http://snipurl.com/2oax0.
