Information you can count on... Mention the U.S. Census Bureau, and most people think of Census 2000, with its somewhat outdated demographic data. But the U.S. Census Bureau offers other products that include business, industry, and demographic statistics -- and the information is more current than you'd expect. This month's issue of ResearchNOTES highlights some of these databases from the U.S. Census Bureau... The American Community Survey, at http://snipurl.com/29m7p, has 2006 demographic estimates available in downloadable maps and datasets. You can get national information, or drill down to the local level. For information about U.S. business and industry, check Census Bureau Economic Programs at http://www.census.gov/econ/www/. It provides economic statistics by geography (to ZIP-code level), sector, and frequency of reporting. Some of the tables are as current as 2007. Go to County Business Patterns, at http://snipurl.com/29mdp, and you can find the total number of business establishments, mid-March employment, first quarter and annual payroll, and number of establishments. These statistics can be broken down by county, ZIP code, and metropolitan area. Enjoy! -- Marcy Visit www.MarcyPhelps.com, my new blog about information and the information industry.
