Mashup mania

In the technology world, "mashups" are Web tools that combine data from more than one source into one place. Mashups frequently involve the merging of statistics with maps, but you’ll also find some that blend search results from several sources. Lately I’ve been exploring what some Web developers have come up with, so this month’s issue of ResearchNOTES highlights a few of my favorite mashups...

HealthMap (www.healthmap.org) maps disease information contained in news reports, validated official alerts and other sources. If you’re planning a trip, researching a particular region or tracking real-time health information, you’ll find these interactive maps useful.

SurfDocs, at surf.googlemashups.com, allows you to browse or search slideshows and related video from SlideShare and YouTube --
all in one place. It’s a nice way to find experts or just get up to speed on a topic.

I love the user-created maps at Google Maps (maps.google.com). Search for a particular location, and on the left side of the results page you’ll see links to these maps. I recently found several places of interest for my upcoming trip to Paris.

What’s your favorite mashup? Let me know, and I’ll share the list with ResearchNOTES readers.

Enjoy! -- Marcy
