Specialized Search Services - Making the Internet Ever More Useful For an upcoming Searchers Academy workshop - http://tinyurl.com/2kpguc (see Workshop 9) - I've been researching key features of the major search engines, looking at the things that each does better than the others. Here are some of the things I've learned... Google Custom Search, at http://google.com/coop/cse/, lets you create your own search engine. Select a group of Web sites or pages and search all or some of them. You can add it to your Web site, or just use it for special topics that you track on a regular basis. You can also customize colors and add your own branding. Yahoo! Search - Audio Search, at http://tinyurl.com/2euz3j, lets you find and access music, podcasts, interviews, and other audio files. What's unique is that, while it searches the open Web, it searches fee-based services too. It's a great way to search multiple sources - sources that are usually not found by search engines. Microsoft Health Vault Search, at https://health.live.com/default.aspx, is brand-new and still in BETA. It combines a health search engine with a Personal Health Record repository (with free registration). On the results page they separate journal articles from other Web results, making it easy to locate more authoritative information. Also, you can save searches and results in the Scrapbook, keeping everything in one place. See you next month - Marcy Marcy M. Phelps Phelps Research +1 303.239.0657; +1 800.600.8041 |
